What is Telemedicine?
Telemedicine basically means medical consultation at a distance. It involves two-way communication between a patient and a doctor located at different places. It includes a growing variety of applications and services using two-way audio, video, email communications that use internet, mobile phones, wireless tools and other forms of telecommunications technology. Telemedicine can play an effective and meaningful role in primary healthcare needs for Bangladesh.
Telemedicine for whom?
The majority of people in low resource countries live in villages and are many miles away from any hospital or qualified doctors. These people, particularly women, children, the infirm and the old mostly do not get any treatment at all. Telemedicine has the potential to provide a solution to this situation where a patient in a rural area can have consultation with a doctor located in the cities. It is hoped, people of Bangladesh will be able to get the benefit of Dhaka University Telemedicine Service.
